From the first walls built around Etruscan cities to the most recent software updates, humans have turned to technology to improve their security. But as with any fundamentalsocietal need, science and technology provide only part of the answer. The articles on the following pages describe innovative thinking about creating a more secure Internet, building safer bridges and many other aspects of security. The research links engineering, public policy, economics and humanities and connects to industry and government.

Confined to no single academic department, security is an area where engineers can have a major impact by combining deep, fundamental research with a spirit of cross-disciplinary collaboration.
