Alan Usas '71 has been appointed vice president of engineering for Avistar Systems, a subsidiary of Avistar Communications Corp. Previously, he was vice president of engineering at NaviLinks, Inc. In his new position, he will head Avistar's product development programs. Dr. Usas' background includes 11 years at Tandem Computers, now Compaq, where he led software engineering initiatives and product strategy in several management roles, and finally as director of software development for Atalla Corp., a Tandem company. Dr. Usas was also a lecturer and administrator at Princeton. He holds a B.S.E. degree in electrical engineering, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
Henry Posner III '77, addressed the World Railway Congress in Vienna, Austria, in September on a subject "seldom discussed at conferences"-the ethics behind the structuring of railway concessions. Mr. Posner encouraged his fellow railway enthusiasts that they not "just look at the economics, but look at the game behind the rules." Mr. Posner is chairman of Pittsburgh-based Railroad Development Corp. (RDC). RDC's operations encompass seven countries: Argentina, Estonia, Guatemala, Peru, Malawi, Mozambique, and the United States. Mr. Posner earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Ting Gong *91 is chief executive officer of HVC Technologies Inc. Dr. Gong left academia in 1993 and has since worked in financial consulting, telecom, and software industries. HVC Technologies is a communication software company based in Iselin, N.J. In addition, Dr. Gong is a managing partner of StarComGroup, a New Jersey-based technical consulting firm. He earned his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering.
Three alums named fellows of AIAA
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has elected three alumni to fellow status. They are:
J. Victor Lebacqz '64 *66 *77, Lee H. Snetman III *59 and Ronald M.C. So *71. Fellows are persons of distinction in aeronautics or astronautics, who have made notable, valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology. Dr. Lebacqz earned his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Ph.D. degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He is deputy director, Aerospace Directorate, at NASA's Ames Research Center. Dr. Snetman was a Guggenheim Fellow at Princeton from 1958 to 1959. He is currently a professor in the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Dr. So earned his Ph.D. degree in aeronautical engineering. He is currently professor and chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong. |
